Q M T

Queens Midtown Tunnel

cover image

With Handles

The physical construction of the tunnel began in 1936 and was completed in 1940. It seems as if almost every manhole cover for the tunnel was a unique cast.

DESIGN:

The very basic diamond grid pattern with QMT in a box might best be described as utilitarian. The sans-serif type is unlike other QMT covers, with the tail of the Q pointy on both ends and the M descending half-way.

UTILITY:

Unknown.

RANGE:

Found in Long Island City on 52st St east of the Pulaski Bridge.
