Like Westchester in the Bronx

This cover may be a relic from before the annexation of the Bronx to New York City in 1874. Found in Riverdale it has a design that is occasionally still found in nearby Yonkers.

DESIGN:

The wheel and spoke design started early to be associated with sewer covers especially in the Bronx and Manhattan. The 16 vents in the cover appear to be a somewhat hap-hazard affair with rings of 7, 5 and 4 holes.

UTILITY:

The central S confirms its function, or is that a dollar sign marking a pot of gold beneath?

RANGE:

There are a few other covers of this type in the north-western Bronx and over the iine in Yonkers, as well as one on Roosevelt Island. This one is at the corner of W 249th St. and the Henry Hudson Parkway.
